A total of 117 people at an elementary school in Tokyo's Shinjuku-ku broke a Guinness World Record on Saturday as they successfully walked 50 meters with their legs strapped to each other. The "117 person, 118 leg" walk was completed by students, teachers and parents at Ushigomenakano Elementary School in Shinjuku-ku. Students and parents planned the event as part of the elementary school's centenary celebrations, and plan to apply to have the record officially recognized. The previous record for a tied-leg walk was 77 people, set in England by employees of a consultancy firm in September last year. The elementary school had formed a team of 78 participants comprising 70 elementary school students between their third and sixth years along with several teachers and parents, and have been practicing since November last year. In the grounds of the school, the participants, with red and blue elastic bands holding their legs together, stepped forward, counting "one, two, one two ..." After 78 people managed the walk together, they decided to try for 100 people to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the school's founding, and got first- and second-year pupils to participate along with parents. Altogether 117 people joined in, and they successfully walked the distance together. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
