HIROSHIMA -- A Japanese woman has filed a criminal complaint accusing four U.S. Marines from the American military's Iwakuni base for sexually assaulting her, it has been learned.

Hiroshima Prefectural Police are investigating the incident as a rape and are in talks with the National Police Agency to decide whether to demand that the U.S. military hand the four Marines over under the Japan-U.S. Status-of-Forces Agreement.

Investigators said the woman, who lives in Hiroshima, was in a restaurant in the city's Naka-ku in the predawn hours of Sunday, when four Marines took her out into their car and drove to a parking lot about two kilometers away. They then allegedly sexually assaulted her inside the vehicle.

Base officials said they were aware that suspicions had emerged. They said they were investigating the allegations and would cooperate fully with the relevant local authorities.
