NAGOYA -- The Aichi Prefectural Government refused to accept a request from Myanmar residents of the prefecture to support democracy demonstrators in their homeland, it has been learned. Myanmar residents of Aichi wrote a letter to Gov. Masaaki Kanda asking for his understanding and support for those in their homeland who were demonstrating for greater democracy in a country strictly controlled by a military junta. But Aichi Prefectural Government officials refused to formally accept the letter.Myanmar's military junta turned on the peaceful demonstrators on Thursday, firing shots and blasting them with tear gas. Myanmar's state-run TV said 10 people, including Japanese freelance photojournalist Kenji Nagai, died in the demonstrations, but foreign diplomats say the actual body count is much higher. The national government has filed a protest with Myanmar over 50-year-old Nagai's death.
