YUZAWA, Akita -- A dairy product manufacturer here has started marketing lotus-root yogurt, targeting people suffering from pollen allergies.

Kurikoma Foods developed the unusual product together with Haruhisa Wago, a professor at Saitama Medical University specializing in immunity and allergy research. The company is confident of the yogurt's beneficial effects.

"For people today, who face various allergies, this is a good product to try throughout the year," a company sales rep said.

Kurikoma extracted mucin, tannin and polyphenols -- found in lotus roots and which are said to alleviate allergy symptoms -- and combined them in powder form. Together with the lactic acid in yogurt, these substances apparently produce a beneficial effect.

The company removed the bitterness characteristic of lotus roots through trial and error, and the taste has reportedly got the thumbs-up from people who have tried it.
