OSAKA -- A group of baby river otters will go on display to the public at an aquarium here, starting from later on this week through to mid-June. The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, in Osaka's Minato-ku, has decided to bring the five baby oriental short-clawed otters outside, to give them a chance to get some sunlight and prevent them from developing skeletal abnormalities. The baby otters -- two males and three females -- were born in March. They are about 20 centimeters long and weigh about 600 grams each. "Their 'kyuu, kyuu' calls and the way they yawn are cute," said Kazuya Matsubara from the public relations section of the aquarium. The oriental short-clawed otters' sunbathing sessions will be held between May 30 and June 15. Two to four baby otters will appear in public once a day, between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., depending on the weather and temperature on the day. Oriental short-clawed otters, called "kotsume kawauso" in Japanese, are the smallest variety of river otters. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
