Cafe dedicated to hit pancake song hopes to strike while the iron is hot PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 April 2008

A cafe commemorating a record-breaking hit song from the 1970s will open in Tokyo's fashionable Ebisu district later this month.

"Taiyaki Cafe," named after the 1975 hit song, "Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun," will open as an umbrella of Tower Cafe in Shibuya-ku, which is run by Tower Records, from April 26 to May 6.

vThe makeshift cafe will serve various items ranging from a set of taiyaki (fish-shaped pancakes stuffed with bean jam) and a drink (600 yen) to a rice bowl with roasted sea bream on top (950 yen), as a tribute to the song that sold 4.5 million copies. The tune describes the "life" of a taiyaki pancake.

The song, sung by Masato Shimon, captured the hearts of children when it was aired on the Fuji TV children's program, "Hirake! Ponkikki," and was released as a single in 1975. Together with a reissued record that was released in 1992, the song recorded sales of about 4.5 million copies and was registered in the Guinness Book of Records as "The greatest selling single in Japan."

In March this year, the song was re-released with a DVD and sold about 4,000 additional copies.

The opening of the Taiyaki Cafe is part of a joint promotional campaign to commemorate the reselling of the song by Pony Canyon and Tower Records. Besides the food menu, the cafe will exhibit fish prints (gyotaku) of taiyaki taken at famous taiyaki shops across the nation and will also sell straps, T-shirts and mugs featuring the popular Taiyaki-kun character.

Visitors to the cafe will be also entertained by live performances by singer Yucca and rock band Danzy's, who will sing the hit tune "Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun" and other songs.

"We had initially planned to hold an event featuring 'Taiyaki-kun' alone, but the taiyaki industry has pledged to give us their full support. We would like to make the cafe 'The Taiyaki Hall of Fame,' a representative of Pony Canyon said.
