Cashless man takes 210,000-yen cross-country cab ride to catch up with convict crony PDF Print E-mail

AKITA -- A man has been arrested after he rode a taxi from Tokyo to Akita -- racking up a fare over 210,000 yen despite carrying no money to pay it -- because he wanted to meet a friend in prison here, police said.

Yukio Fujita, 56, unemployed of Ota-ku, Tokyo, was arrested for fraud.

Police are unsure of the suspect's personal details because he was carrying nothing to confirm the identify he gave them.

Fujita admits to the allegations against him.

"I wanted to see a buddy of mine who is currently being held in Akita Prison," he told the police.

Police said Fujita caught a taxi in Ota-Ku early on Monday morning and asked the driver to drop him off near Akita Prison in Akita just before 1 p.m. When they arrived, the driver told him the fare, including expressway tolls, came to 218,590 yen, but Fujita said he had no money, so the cabby drove him to the nearest police station and handed him in, police said.
