NAKANOJO, Gunma -- A local commerce association has launched a drive to promote wider use of the largely unpopular 2,000-yen bills. The local association of commerce in Nakanojo -- the hometown of the late Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, who endorsed the issuance of the 2,000-yen bills to commemorate the G-8 Summit in Okinawa in 2000 -- started a drive that will provide better bargains for users of 2,000-yen bills. At 22 stores that support the campaign, shoppers will get 3,000 yen worth of goods when they use a 2,000-yen bill. In addition, they will be presented with service coupons. The campaign will last until July 7, when the Toyako Summit starts in Hokkaido. The idea behind the drive was taken from a similar campaign launched by a local shopping district in Sapporo, in which customers who used 2,000 yen bills could get better deals at participating stores. The 2,000-yen bills have been hugely unpopular as they are often inconvenient to use. The number of 2,000-yen bills on the market has dropped to one-third of the number when their use was at its peak. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
