Peepholes in interrogation room doors and microphones broadcasting the questioning of suspects are among steps that should be considered to ensure transparency in police activities, National Police Agency chief Hiroto Yoshimura said. Japan's top cop suggested the moves be taken amid widespread public criticism of police investigation methods, sparked mainly by a recent case in Toyama where police were instrumental in securing the rape conviction of an innocent man. NPA officials are currently examining a number of measures aimed at improving police transparency when questioning suspects. Police said they hope to be able to announce within this year the steps they plan to take.
