HANNAN, Osaka -- A mid-ranking police officer has been arrested for causing a traffic accident while riding a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol, police said. Mitsuyoshi Sumida, 54, an assistant inspector at Joto Police Station in Osaka, is accused of violating the Road Traffic Law. At around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sumida was riding his motorcycle on a municipal road in Hannan when he fell down, crashing the bike into an oncoming car, local police said. Sumida suffered slight injuries to his face while a 56-year-old woman who was driving the car was not wounded. Officers took him into custody after a breath test found that he had been riding the motorcycle under the influence of alcohol. After completing night duty, Sumida drank two cups of sake on a train on his way home at around 2 p.m., and shortly after arriving home, he rode his motorcycle, according to investigators.
