The Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty for a man convicted of murdering his live-in girlfriend and her daughter in Kanagawa Prefecture in 2001. "There is no room for leniency considering the motives for his crime," Presiding Judge Chiharu Saiguchi said in dismissing an appeal by the defendant, 47-year-old Toshiaki Kaga. Kaga got into an argument with Manami Matsui, 12, the daughter of his live-in girlfriend, 43-year-old Kazuko Matsui, at their home in Isehara in August 2001, and strangled the young girl, according to lower court rulings. After Kazuko came home, he fatally stabbed her in the back, and stole her cash card and other valuables, the rulings said. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
