ASAHI, Chiba -- A farmer suspected of dumping more than 100 dead pigs in his fields to save on disposal costs was arrested Tuesday, police said. Shoichi Atsuta, 61, a hog raiser from Asahi, stands accused of violating the Waste Management and Public Cleansing Law. Atsuta has admitted to the allegations saying he didn't want to pay to dispose of the dead pigs, which costs 2,000 yen to 3,000 yen each. "I dumped the pigs that were born dead or were crushed to death. I didn't want to bear the costs of disposing their bodies," Atsuta was quoted as telling police. In the specific case for which he was arrested, Atsuta abandoned the bodies of 23 baby pigs on his farmland in Asahi between March 6 and 11, local police said. He is suspected of having dumped 124 baby pigs at four separate locations over the past three years, according to investigators. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
