Fisherman found dead on boat off Sado Island PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 April 2008

SADO, Niigata -- An angler was found dead on his privately owned fishing boat off Sado Island on Tuesday morning, local coast guard officials said.

At around 8:45 p.m. on Monday, the Sado office of the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) received an emergency call saying that a fishing boat owned by Kiichiro Sekiguchi, 55, a bus driver, had failed to return to port as scheduled.

Crewmembers from a JCG patrol boat found Sekiguchi's 0.6-ton fishing boat about 37 kilometers off the Futami area of Sado at around 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday.

Sekiguchi was found on the vessel, but his heart and lungs had stopped. He was rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead. Sekiguchi had regularly taken medicine to lower his blood pressure, a JCG officer quoted an acquaintance of Sekiguchi as saying.

Sekiguchi had left a pier near his home on his fishing boat alone at about 7 a.m. on Monday.
