Toyonoshima upset grand champion Hakuho on Wednesday, leaving unheralded Goeido in sole possession of the lead at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

In the day's final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan, No. 5 maegashira Toyonoshima stunned Hakuho at the faceoff and shoved the Mongolian wrestler out with a fierce shove to the chest.

Hakuho, who is looking for his first title at sumo's highest rank, dropped to 9-2 while Toyonoshima improved to 7-4 in the 15-day tourney.

In an earlier bout, No. 14 maegashira Goeido forced out Takekaze to improve to 10-1. Takekaze, an eighth-ranked maegashira, fell to 8-3.

Elsewhere, ozeki Kotomitsuki swatted down Aminishiki to improve to 7-4.

Sekiwake Aminishiki, who was once in the lead, lost his third straight bout and dropped to 8-3.

Sekiwake Asasekiryu got both arms on the belt of Kotooshu and hoisted the Bulgarian ozeki over the edge to improve to 5-6. Kotooshu was handed his fourth loss of the tournament.

Chiyotaikai became the second ozeki casualty of the day when Kotoshogiku dodged to his side at the faceoff and watched as the veteran grappler toppled to the dirt surface.

No. 3 maegashira Kotoshogiku improved to 7-4 while Chiyotaikai dropped to 8-3.

Komusubi Ama overpowered Homasho to improve to 8-3 while handing the top maegashira his sixth loss against five wins. (AP)
