A Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) member who had been hospitalized after performing hara-kiri in front of the Diet Building last week in a suicide bid was rearrested Tuesday, police said. Shungo Suzukida, 20, a lance corporal at the GSDF, stands accused of trespassing and illegal possession of a sword under the Firearms and Swords Control Law. Suzukida was quoted by investigators as saying that he was dissatisfied with the government's diplomatic policies and other issues. At around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday last week, Suzukida stabbed himself in the stomach with a sword in front of the central entrance to the Diet Building in Tokyo, police said. Police officers arrested him at the scene for trespassing, but temporarily released him shortly afterwards for hospitalization, the Metropolitan Police Department said. He was taken into custody again on Tuesday after he had recovered considerably from his stab wounds. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
