Hakuho, Asashoryu both victorious on day 3 of Summer Grand Sumo Tournament PDF Print E-mail

TOKYO (AP) -- Grand champion Hakuho improved to 3-0 at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament Tuesday with an easy takedown of winless Estonian wrestler Baruto.

A powerful shove by the Mongolian sent the No. 1 maegashira tumbling backward with a rear foot sweep.

Hakuho is seeking his seventh title win and looking to avenge a final-day loss to main rival and fellow grand champion Asashoryu at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in March.

Asashoryu scored his second win of the tournament after a shocking opening-day loss, making quick work of Kokkai with an aggressive drive out of the ring.

If Asashoryu succeeds in winning his 23rd Emperor's Cup here, the victory would move him into fourth place on the all-time title list.

In other major third-day bouts, Bulgarian wrestler Kotooshu exchanged a series of blows with Miyabiyama before shoving the No. 3 maegashira out of the ring.

Kotooshu, who must emerge from the 15-day meet with a winning record to maintain his ozeki status, improved to 3-0.

But it was a bad day for other ozeki, with upsets by lower-ranked wrestlers.

Chiyotaikai, who dropped to 2-1, fell victim to a hand pull down by Wakanoho of Russia.

"I was very happy to have defeated an ozeki," Wakanoho told national broadcaster NHK after the bout.

Kotomitsuki took on Kyokutenho, who eventually forced the ozeki from the ring. Kotomitsuki is now 2-1, while Kyokutenho of Mongolia improves to 1-2.

Ozeki Kaio fell to 1-2 at the hands of komusubi Kisenosato.
