Hakuho moves closer to title at Autumn Sumo PDF Print E-mail

Mongolian grand champion Hakuho defeated Goeido on Saturday to move a step closer to winning the Emperor's Cup at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

Hakuho threw Goeido to the dirt surface in the day's final bout to improve to 12-2, and can win the Emperor's Cup on the final day Sunday with a win over ozeki Chiyotaikai.

Mongolian Kyokutenho, the only other wrestler with a chance of winning the tournament, defeated Ama in an earlier bout to improve to 11-3 at Ryogoku Kokugikan.

No. 14 maegashira Goeido dropped to 10-4.

In other major bouts, Kotomitsuki got a hand on the back of Chiyotaikai and swatted his fellow ozeki down to give both wresters a record of 9-5.

In an all-Mongolian showdown, No. 12 maegashira Kyokutenho overpowered Ama to improve to 11-3.

Komusubi Ama dropped to 10-4.

A loss to Tamakasuga on Sunday by Kyokutenho would give the title to Hakuho.

No. 10 maegahsira Kasugao used an arm throw at the edge of the ring to upend Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu to improve to 10-4.

Kotooshu fell to 8-7.

No. 15 maegashira Yoshikaze forced out Russian Roho to pick up his 10th win against four losses.

Roho, a ninth-ranked maegashira, dropped to 5-9. (AP)
