Hospitals over certain sizes will soon be obliged to set up an investigation if a patient dies as a result of a suspected medical blunder, Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry officials said. The ministry will revise the Medical Service Law enforcement regulations to require medical institutions of certain scales to set up an investigation panel, including non-medical staff such as lawyers, if an alleged fatal medical accident occurs. They will also be mandated to provide a sufficient explanation to the victim's family. In-house panels will be also have to work in conjunction with a permanent third-party committee that the ministry will soon set up to investigate fatal medical errors. Officials said the ministry is aiming to introduce the system sometime in fiscal 2010 or later. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
