A judge charged with stalking a woman who worked for him will have his case heard before an impeachment hearing, the Supreme Court said Monday. Yoshiharu Shimoyama, 55, the judge charged with breaking the Stalker Regulation Law, acted in "an improper manner that caused a remarkable loss of faith in judges," the court said as it applied to a Diet committee to open an impeachment hearing. Shimoyama is just the sixth judge to face an impeachment hearing since 2001. The impeachment hearing will decide whether Shimoyama should be dismissed. If it rules that he should lose his qualifications to practice law, he would also become the sixth judge to suffer that fate since 2001. Hironobu Takezaki, head of the Tokyo High Court, said that the contents of the mail Shiroyama sent and the regularity with which he sent it determined that there were sufficient grounds for his dismissal. Shimoyama has been charged with sending 16 anonymous e-mails to a woman in her 20s in the hope his affection for her would be reciprocated while she worked under him at the Tsuru Branch of the Kofu District Court and the Kofu Family Court during February and March this year.
