NEW YORK -- Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura protested to his Myanmar counterpart Nyan Win here Saturday, Japan time, over the death of Japanese photojournalist Kenji Nagai in Myanmar.

Komura lodged the protest with the Myanmar foreign minister during a meeting at UN headquarters.

"There was suppression of a peaceful demonstration during which time a Japanese was killed. It was extremely regrettable," Komura told Nyan Win.

Nyan Win apologized.

"I am terribly sorry," he said.

Freelance photojournalist Kenji Nagai was shot dead in Yangon on Thursday as he was covering democracy demonstrations in the Myanmar capital. Myanmar's state-run TV says 10 people, including Nagai, died in the demonstrations against the military junta controlling the country, but opposition groups say the actual death toll could run into the hundreds.
