Law to be revised to outlaw daggers, lethal swords PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 July 2008

The National Police Agency (NPA) decided Thursday to outlaw the possession of daggers and other lethal swords following a deadly random attack in Tokyo's Akihabara in which the culprit used a dagger, officials said.

The NPA will submit to the Diet a bill to revise the Firearms and Swords Control Law for the first time in 46 years to that end.

The current law bans the possession of swords with a 15-centimeter or longer blade without permission from a prefectural public safety commission.

The dagger used in the Akihabara rampage had a 13-centimeter blade and is not subject to the ban under the current law.
