A man who was apprehended for hitting a police officer in the back during a demonstration in Tokyo managed to escape, apparently with one hand handcuffed, it has emerged. Metropolitan Police Department officers are searching for the man on suspicion of interfering with officers in the performance of their duties. Investigators said the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, got into a scuffle with a 28-year-old riot unit officer during a demonstration on a street in the Ginza district of Tokyo's Chuo-ku on Sunday, and hit the officer in the back. The man was pulled away from the protesters and another officer was in the process of handcuffing him, when participants in the area ran over. In the confusion, police lost sight of the man, and he escaped. The officer involved confirmed that he had handcuffed the man. Police suspect he may have fled with one of his hands handcuffed. The demonstration was held after a national workers meeting in which about 2,750 people took part.
