Friday, 23 May 2008

A man died and two others were slightly injured in two accidents on the Metropolitan Expressway on Thursday morning, police said.

At around 4:40 a.m., a truck hauling a 20-ton trailer rolled over near the Kosuge Junction on the Chuo Kanjo Route of the expressway in Katsushika-ku, Tokyo, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

A man in his 30s, believed to be the driver of the truck, was thrown out of the vehicle and fell about 10 meters onto the bank of the Arakawa River. He died about 90 minutes later. Police are trying to confirm his identity.

A massive number of sheets of paper that the trailer was carrying were scattered around on the road near the scene following the accident. The expressway was closed for four hours near the area to remove the paper.

At around 7 a.m. a pile-up involving five vehicles including trucks and vans occurred on the expressway's Bay Route near the Shin-Kiba Interchange in Koto-ku, Tokyo, according to investigators.

The driver of one of the trucks in his 50s, who was temporarily trapped in the vehicle, and another person were slightly injured. The expressway was temporarily closed between the Kasai Junction and Shin-Kiba Interchange.
