TAKATSUKI, Osaka -- A man died after being hit by a train at a railway station here while apparently trying to pick up his mobile phone from the tracks, police said.

At around 11:35 p.m. on Sunday, the driver of a rapid service train bound for Maibara from Himeji spotted a man on the tracks of the JR Tokaido Line at Takatsuki Station, and applied the emergency brakes, local police said. The train came to a half after hitting the man.

The man was rushed to a hospital where he died shortly afterwards. He has been identified as Tetsuo Goto, 59, a company executive from Nagaokakyo, Kyoto Prefecture.

Goto's mobile phone was found on the tracks and the train driver said the man appeared to be searching for something on the tracks.

Investigators suspect that Goto jumped onto the tracks from the platform in a bid to pick up his mobile phone that he had accidentally dropped.
