An unemployed man jumped to his death from an apartment block in Tokyo on Tuesday, landing on a cyclist and seriously injuring her, police said.

Police said the 53-year-old man jumped from the 11th floor of an apartment block in the Tokyo city of Tachikawa at about 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, and landed on top of a 46-year-old housewife who was cycling by.

The man was taken to a hospital but died. The woman suffered serious injuries, including a broken left leg.

Tachikawa Police Station investigators said the man had climbed over the railing on the balcony of his home and leaped.
