UJITAWARA, Kyoto -- A 186-meter-long guardrail, worth about 1 million yen, has been stolen from a street here, local government officials said. A resident of Ujitawara found a large part of a 600-meter-long guardrail installed along a municipal road in the town's Okuyamada district was missing on Tuesday and alerted the municipal government. Local police launched an investigation into the case in response to a criminal complaint filed by the municipal government. Investigators have confirmed that the 186-meter section, which consists of 46 4-meter-long metal plates weighing a total of 1.5 tons, was missing. The road around the scene has been closed since April 2005. Metal theft has been rampant across the country as metal prices have been rising on the international market
