A moderate earthquake jolted Iwate and Miyagi prefectures late Tuesday night, the Meteorological Agency said. There were no reports of casualties or damage to property, police said. No tsunami warning was issued following the quake. The temblor that struck at 11:04 p.m. registered 3 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale in the Iwate prefecture cities of Ofunato, Rikuzentakata, Kamaishi, Kitakami and Ichinoseki and the Miyagi Prefecture cities of Kesennuma, Kurihara, Tome and Osaki. The focus of the earthquake, which is estimated to have reached 5.6 on the open-ended Richter scale, was located about 40 kilometers below the seabed off Miyagi Prefecture, agency officials said.
