More security camera footage emerges as police probe murder of high school girl PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 May 2008

MAIZURU, Kyoto -- Police investigating the brutal killing of a 15-year-old girl whose body was found on the bank of a river here have found more security camera footage linked to the case, law enforcers said.

Investigators said two people were captured on a security camera walking about 1.5 kilometers away from the area where the body of 15-year-old Miho Kosugi was found. One of the people is believed to be Kosugi, and the other person is thought to be a man. The man was reportedly wheeling a bicycle.

Separate security camera footage has already emerged in the case.

Investigators said that shortly before 1 a.m. on May 7, Kosugi phoned a friend from near a pharmacy about 1.5 kilometers away from her home, saying she was out walking by herself. Later, a Self-Defense Force facility security camera showed two people walking along a prefectural road in Maizuru leading north.

The new security camera footage was captured near an intersection about 1.5 kilometers north of the Self-Defense Force facility. Based on clothing, police said it was likely one of the people was Kosugi.

Kosugi is believed to have been attacked near the area along the Aseku River in Maizuru, where her body was found. In the early hours of May 7, several residents in the area reported hearing a woman scream, and a car driving off suddenly.

One resident who went to bed shortly after 12 a.m. was awoken by a woman's short, high-pitched scream. As the person was drifting back to sleep, the sound of a car driving off suddenly was heard. Family members in another room also reported hearing a scream.

Another couple were woken up by a young woman's voice at about 2 a.m. The voice was audible for about 5 minutes. The couple reportedly heard the words "there" and "here" clearly. The tone of the words was reportedly violent.
