GIFU -- A female victim of domestic violence had to move to a different address and take time off work because a municipal government worker gave her estranged husband a copy of her address details, local government officials said. In late April, the Gifu Municipal Government paid the woman 980,000 yen in compensation. Municipal government officials said that the woman took measures at the municipal government sometime around July last year so that her husband would not be able to obtain a copy of a supplementary family register form showing her address details. However, a worker in charge forgot about the measure, and in September the woman's husband managed to obtain a copy of the details. Measures to stop the issuing of supplementary family register forms that list people's addresses can be taken under the Basic Resident Register Law. When victims consult police or public institutions such as women's support centers and it is judged that they are victims of stalking or domestic violence, local governments can prohibit the issuing of the forms that contain their address details. A Gifu Municipal Government official said it had been a careless mistake. "We were contacted by a public body and should have dealt with the matter straight away, but made a careless mistake," said an official from the division handling residents' information. In December last year, the municipal government handed a worker in charge of the matter a pay cut for the period between January and March. The municipal government's civil life division head at the time was handed a warning, and the head of the citizens' office was reprimanded. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS.
