Nagoya's collapsed Italian village opens doors for bankruptcy sale PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 11 May 2008

NAGOYA -- Failed theme park-cum-shopping mall Villaggio Italia opened its doors one last time for a bankruptcy sale at the weekend, in an attempt to raise enough cash to cover ex-employees' back wages.

Goods were marked down by 50 to 90 percent, and around 2,000 visitors queued up before the gates opened at 11 a.m. on Saturday, in a scene reminiscent of the facility's opening in April 2005.

It's the first time Villaggio Italia has opened its gates since May 6, the day before it filed for bankruptcy.

The mall's operator immediately fired all 360 employees following its closure, but 40 were rehired temporarily for the sale, during which 14 stores operated directly by the village sold clothing, accessories and other miscellaneous goods, with another 12 tenant stores also taking part.

Among the visitors on Saturday was a 63-year-old housewife from Nagoya's Meito-ku who said she had visited the Italian village more than 10 times.

"I often came here because I liked the canzoni and the live performances by Italians. I came shopping today as a final commemoration," she said.

The sale will continue until May 18 at the latest, depending on stock. The opening of the village for the sale is temporary, and no plans for a full-scale reopening have yet been made.
