NHK reporter faces punishment for plagiarizing article PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 06 June 2008

A reporter with NHK faces punishment for plagiarizing an article carried in a local newspaper, the public broadcaster said.

The reporter, Akihiro Ota, 35, who works at the NHK Matsumoto bureau in Nagano Prefecture, expressed regret over his actions. "I deeply regret having written the story without interviewing municipal government officials in charge," he was quoted as telling his bosses.

Ota wrote a story on the Azumino Municipal Government's decision to hire a celebrity couple for a tourism campaign after reading an article in the Shinano Mainichi Shimbun about the decision, NHK officials said.

A municipal government official contacted NHK's Nagano Station that supervises the bureau, saying that it was never interviewed by NHK over the tourism campaign.

His bosses questioned Ota, but did not take any punitive measures after he explained that the mayor announced the plan when he unveiled the city's draft budget for fiscal 2008.

However, Ota admitted to the wrongdoing after the Shinano Mainichi pointed out that NHK plagiarized its story.
