Polar bear's expected birth proves a false alarm PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 February 2008

SAPPORO -- A female polar bear that was presumed to be pregnant is not expecting after all, zoo officials have announced.

Lala, a 13-year-old polar bear that is kept at Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo, was assumed to be pregnant after it was confirmed that she had mated with Denali, a male polar bear at the zoo, in spring last year.

Zoo officials had moved Lala into a special room in the fall last year, and the bear started to stay in the room all the time. Zookeepers thought she was shortly going to have a baby but Lala recently left the room and there was no trace of a miscarriage.

"We have no choice but to give up this time, but we want them to try to have a baby again," said a zoo official.
