The government will begin urgent drainage work on three lakes that were created when mudslides dammed up rivers following the devastating earthquake in the Tohoku Region. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced Tuesday that it would cut river channels along three of the 11 lakes that emerged following landslides in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures in order to drain the water and fix the flow of the rivers. From Tuesday afternoon, heavy machinery and drainage pumps for the construction work were to be transported by air to the lakes. The areas to be covered by the repair work are: the Azabu district and Ogawara district along the Hazama River in Kurihara, Miyagi Prefecture, and the Ichinonohara district along the Iwai River in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture. The project will cost a total of 2.48 billion yen. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
