YOKOSUKA, Kanagawa -- A seaman aboard the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) destroyer that collided with a fishing boat attempted to commit suicide after being questioned over the accident that left two missing, sources close to the case said. The leading seaman who was on duty aboard the Aegis destroyer Atago when it collided with the trawler Seitokumaru off Chiba Prefecture last month cut his wrist in a suicide attempt while aboard the destroyer moored at the Yokosuka Base on Monday evening, the sources said. He was taken to a Self-Defense Force's hospital in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. His condition is not life-threatening, the sources said. The MSDF is questioning the seaman over the motives behind his suicide attempt. According to the sources, the seaman was one of the crewmembers who were on duty on the enclosed bridge on the destroyer at the time of the accident. He had been questioned by the 3rd Regional Maritime Safety Headquarters several times about how they were keeping watch before the collision and their working conditions. Last Friday, the Defense Ministry filed an interim report on the accident, acknowledging that there were problems with the way the Atago crewmembers kept watch before the collision. "We cannot comment on the suicide attempt because it concerns the person's privacy," said a representative of the ministry. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
