Security firm publishes crime-fighting handbook for working women PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 08 March 2008

Security firm Secom Co. has unveiled a crime-prevention handbook for working women to help them avoid becoming the victims of attacks.

The handbook titled "Lifestyle Woman 360 degrees," was written by five women aged in their 20s and 30s, using a female perspective to provide crime-prevention tips especially for women.

The book gives concrete examples of scenes in which women could be attacked, such as when they are returning from a matchmaking party, absorbed in a cell-phone e-mail from a man they met at the party -- unaware that a suspicious person is approaching them. Through these descriptions, the handbook stresses the dangers underlying everyday scenes.

Police statistics show that about 77 percent of crimes against women involve theft such as purse-snatching. However, a questionnaire carried out by Secom when the book was published found that only 10 percent of women adopt crime prevention measures when they go out. In line with its name, the handbook is likely to encourage more women to keep a 360-degree lookout as they strive to keep themselves safe on Japan's streets.
