Suggestions pour in for naming of 'ugly' Nara mascot PDF Print E-mail

NARA -- Suggestions for the naming of a mascot to commemorate the 1,300th Anniversary of the Nara Heijo-kyo capital are pouring in, despite a deluge of criticism that the mascot "isn't cute," it has been learned.

As of the end of last month, about 2,300 submissions had been received, but by Friday, the number of submissions had surged to about 7,000. The large response, surprising officials in charge of the anniversary event, is thought to have been sparked by newspaper and television reports.

The Association for Commemorative Events of the 1,300th Anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo Capital announced the design of the mascot on Feb. 12, and called for suggestions for the mascot's name on its Web site. However, complaints flooded in about the mascot's realistic design. These complaints were reported in the media, including the Japanese Mainichi Shimbun.

"The effect of the reports has certainly raised interest in the issue," said an official from the association.

One group calling for the withdrawal of the mascot, the "1,300-nen sai o sukuu-kai" (Committee to Save the 1,300th Anniversary Festival), has set up a Web site outlining its opposition to the character.

Makoto Himura, a 26-year-old representative of the group, said that the committee wanted to carry out various activities with local residents to "truly liven up the 1,300th anniversary celebrations." The committee plans to collect signatures from residents in front of Nara's Kintetsu Nara Station on Sunday.
