An art mural dedicated to peace is set to be unveiled at the Sumida Ward Office in Tokyo on Monday, the 63rd anniversary of the Great Tokyo Air Raids in 1945 that killed more than 100,000 people. The 12-meter-tall, 8-meter-wide temporary mural will be officially unveiled in a ceremony at the ward office at noon on Monday, and will be followed by a concert for peace. On March 10, 1945, U.S. airplanes bombed the capital and killed more than 100,000 people overnight. About one-fourth of the casualties, some 27,000 people, were residents of Sumida-ku. The ward suffered severe casualties because the area was crowded with wooden houses, according to ward officials. The art mural, which has been made annually since 1992, consists of paper cranes folded by residents of the ward and other areas. This year, about 150,000 paper cranes form an image of a crane flying into space from the Earth, embodying this year's theme of "Peace -- Let's bring it to the world and to space."
