KURUME, Fukuoka -- Plagued by internecine gang warfare through Kyushu in recent weeks, about 2,300 demonstrators took to the streets of Kurume over the weekend to protest against the yakuza. Some 500 protestors gathered outside the Kurume headquarters of the Dojin-kai yakuza gang and shouted in unison "violence is unforgivable." The Dojin-kai has been battling a turf war in recent weeks with the Kyushu Seido-kai, another yakuza gang based on the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. Each year, Kurume hosts two conferences aimed at ridding society of organized crime syndicates.
