Gun law offenders will face tougher penalties from December after the passage of a bill through the House of Councillors. The Upper House unanimously passed a bill calling for revisions to the Firearms and Swords Control and Weapons Manufacture Laws that imposed heftier punishments on the use or possession of guns. Convicted offenders of the laws will now face harsher penalties, including a maximum fine of 30 million yen. The revisions passed Monday are the most comprehensive to have been made to Japan's gun laws in 12 years and will come into effect at the end of December.
