Saturday, 29 September 2007

HITA, Oita -- Two elderly women died in a hit-and-run accident on a national highway here Friday night, police said.

At about 7:05 p.m., two elderly women were crossing Route 386 in the Tomoda district of Hita when they were hit by a car, local police said. They died from severe head injuries.

The women have been identified as Tsugie Kasahara, 83, and Matsuko Yoshitomi, 83, who lived in the same neighborhood near the accident scene.

The car sped off the scene, prompting police to launch search for its driver on suspicion of causing a hit-and-run accident. Investigators found fragments of window glass and blue paint scattered around the scene.
