Woman poisoned after drinking green tea laced with herbicide PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 April 2008

KATO, Hyogo -- A woman became sick after drinking green tea from a PET bottle that was laced with a poisonous herbicide, police said.

Police are investigating the case on suspicion of forcible obstruction of business and causing injury.

A 54-year-old unemployed woman from Kato, Hyogo Prefecture, felt sick and was taken to a hospital after drinking green tea from a "Sokenbicha" PET bottle at around 3 or 4 p.m. on Sunday, local police said.

Police detected traces of the herbicide glyphosate in the tea.

The woman had bought the 500-milliliter PET bottle -- a product of Coca Cola Japan Co. -- at the Yashiro outlet of Jusco supermarket in Kato on around April 3 or 4. She drank the tea on Sunday afternoon but immediately spat it out because it tasted strange.

The victim reportedly doesn't remember any details about the cap of the PET bottle when she opened it.

The "Sokenbicha" green tea was produced at Coca Cola's Akashi factory in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, on Jan. 23, and its use-by date was due to expire on April 11.

The supermarket removed all "Sokenbicha" products before Monday evening, and the Hyogo Prefectural Government inspected the store and the factory on Tuesday morning.

A similar incident surfaced in Tokyo earlier this month, in which a 43-year-old man from Nerima-ku suffered diarrhea after drinking "Healthya" green tea from a PET bottle his wife had bought at a supermarket last month.

The beverage -- a product of Kao Corp. -- was also laced with glyphosate.

Glyphosate is mainly used to remove weeds. Though its toxicity is low, it causes nausea, headaches and diarrhea when consumed by humans.
