A young man and woman have gassed themselves to death by producing toxic hydrogen sulfide in a guestroom at a Tokyo hotel, police said. At around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, police received an emergency call from an employee of a hotel in the Kabukicho entertainment district of Shinjuku-ku, saying that a guestroom was giving off a smell like rotten eggs. Rescue workers found a young man and woman collapsed in the bathroom. They were rushed to a hospital where they were pronounced dead about 90 minutes later. Hydrogen sulfide has been detected in the room. A piece of paper bearing, "Danger! Do not open. Hydrogen sulfide being generated," was on the bathroom door, and empty detergent bottles were abandoned there. Investigators suspect that the two mixed detergent in the bathroom and produced deadly hydrogen sulfide to gas themselves to death. The man appeared to be about 30 years old while the woman is believed to be about 20. Local police are trying to confirm their identities.
