KYOTO -- A zookeeper died on Saturday after he was apparently attacked by a tiger while cleaning its cage, police said. A visitor at Kyoto City Zoo in the ancient capital's Sakyo-ku found the zookeeper, 40-year-old Atsushi Ito, collapsed in the Amur tigers' cage. Ito's heart and lungs had stopped functioning by the time colleagues rescued him, and had sustained several injuries to his head and neck. He died later in hospital. Investigators suspect that one of the two Amur tigers kept in the cage, an 11-year-old male called Victor, attacked Ito. Victor is on loan from Tama Zoological Park in Hino, western Tokyo, for mating with a female Amur tiger at the zoo. Copyright 2005-2006 THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS. All rights reserved.
