The ruins of Nakagusuku Castle, straddling present-day Nakagusuku and Kitanakagusuku Villages in Okinawa, sit atop an open expanse nearly 150 meters above Nakagusuku Bay. Construction of the castle began in the early 1400s, and the original residents completed four of the fortress’s eventual six enclosures. But ownership changed in 1440, when a local lord named Gosamaru moved into the castle. This transition was not without deft martial and political maneuvering, however. Having cemented his reputation as a brave warrior during his alliance with Sho Hashi against the lord of Nakijin, Gosamaru offered his daughter in marriage to King Sho Taikyu. To be closer to the Shuri-based king and help watch over a rival lord at nearby Katsuren Castle, he moved to from Zakimi Castle in Yomitan to Nakagusuku Castle.
